Quality silk clothing can last a lifetime and may become family heirlooms, if properly cared for. This makes the method used to clean a silk garment is incredibly important.

In contrast to the widespread opinion, and even recommendations from manufacturers, that silk should be dry cleaned, our customers regularly hand wash and machine wash S.BON silk products, especially those made of heavyweight sandwashed silk.

  • Use a mild detergent specially formulated for silk and wool
  • Soak silk in lukewarm water for 3-5 minutes (for our dark coloured silk garments, do not let it soak, just quickly wash it in cold water). Washing machines often have a programme for washing wool, silk and delicate pieces at a temperature of 30° - 40°.
  • Handle wet silk with even greater care, as it is very delicate.
  • After 5 minutes remove silk from water and rinse the fabric using cold water adding a teaspoon of vinegar to completely rid it of the shampoo.
  • Wrap silk in a dry towel to remove the remaining liquid. Use several layers when using dark silk. Air-dry the garment away from sunlight until damp dry. Use a padded or plastic hanger to distribute the weight of the wet garment.
  • Silk should always be ironed from the backside and it should still be slightly moist. Check your iron's setting!
  • Do not iron silk too hot! Silk is a protein structure much like human hair and heat will damage it.

Remember:

  • Never spray silk with perfume, deodorant, perspirant
  • Never bleach silk
  • Never expose silk to direct sunlight for long periods of time
  • Don't spray silk with water while ironing
  • Don't treat individual stains with water
  • Always iron the backside only
  • Never wring dry or twist, don’t vigorously rub
